Chapter 290: Overwhelming Wealth
Chapter 290: Overwhelming Wealth
With the conclusion of the first item of the auction, Violet sat back into her chair with a satisfied smile on her face, clearly quite pleased with herself over her victory against the city lord.
"Hey, Violet? Why did you buy that sword? You don’t use swords and I don’t think anyone that we know would really want to use it either?" Luna asked with a bemused look on her face.
Violet nodded seriously as she responded. "Simple, that Lady wanted the item so I took it from her."
Luna blinked at her companions simple reply. "Okay and why was that important? And why jump the price up so much for it?"
"So that everyone knows that it is useless to try and bid against me."
Luna blinked once more, her brain quickly realising what she had done. True violet had just wanted to snub the city lord, something that Luna was quite alright with. But she had also made quite the calculating move, by so openly flaunting her wealth and upping the bidding price so dramatically she was effectively warding off anyone trying to start a bidding war with her.
Luna couldn’t help but chuckle at her companions actions as she lent forward and took a sip of the wine provided to them.
Meanwhile their guest in their private balcony was having a very different reaction. Whilst Rose already knew that Violet was insanely rich, she had just given her a platinum coin out of nowhere after all.
Still hearing how she had so openly overshadowed the city lord, on the very first item of the auction no less! It was both a blatant challenge against her authority as well a open display of her own importance, something that would not go unnoticed by the various nobles in attendance today.
Still despite the explosive start to the auction the lovely host took the events in stride, shortly thereafter the next item was brought out on stage.
"For our second item today I have a selection of high quality healing potions. These potions are potent enough that healing a lost limb is no mere fantasy. It can bring one back from the brink of death if administered swiftly enough.
We have with us 5 such potions up for grabs today. All shall be sold off individually and the starting price is 5 gold a potion."
As she spoke the potions in question were brought out on stage. They rested on a velvet cushion in glass bottles, the liquid inside was a brilliant crimson with etherial swirls of dense mana permeating through the potion.
The bidding started swiftly and rose at just a rapid pace. Jumping up to 20 gold, 30, 40, all the way until Violet once again voiced her own bid and completely shut down all other votes with two simple words.
"100 gold."
Her clear voice cut through the boisterous crowd, like a hot knife through butter. Competing bidders fell silent and the hostess looked up towards Violet with a strange gleam in her eyes as her smile just grew in size.
"100 gold is the offer, will anyone dare to raise the price higher? No? Well going once. Going twice. And sold!"
Mourners sprung up around the entire auction hall as the people in the lower seating peered up to try and see who it was that had so completely dominated the first two items up for sale.
The nobles in similar balconies also glanced over with calculating gazes, clearly trying to understand where she came from and how she possessed such wealth, and, perhaps more importantly, how they may benefit from her wealth in the future.
Acting oblivious to that violet then sat back once again. She did not place another bid for the next 3 potions sold, each one going for considerably less than what Violet spent.
Still they did go for quite a lot as people were eager to buy them up now that the financial juggernaut that was Violet seemed willing to allow them to buy anything.
The potions sold for 54 gold, 62 gold and then 58 gold respectively. When the last potion was announced people seemed eager to begin bidding once again, all eager to try and snatch up this miracle potion.
Saddly the first voice to call out sent unconscious divers down their spines. "50 gold." Announces Violet, her voice ringing out clearly once again.
The crowd held their breath, everyone waiting to see if anyone would raise a bid to try and win the potion, yet, they all knew already. They stood no chance.
"55 gold." Came a slightly desperate call from down in the stage below, yet before the man’s voice could even begin to settle Violet did her usual thing and instantly crushed all hope of even pretending that this was a fair auction.
"100 gold."
And like that Violet secured herself a second high quality health potion.
From there the auction went about as normal mostly, despite being able to easily outbid everyone present on basically every item presented, Violet had no intention of buying so much useless stuff. She had already bought that silly sword so instead limited herself to only purchase items that interested her.
An ancient tomb was brought out, its cover was bound shut with a clasp made of ice. It needed to be kept in a environmentally sealed glass box as the cold it emitted could kill someone below level 40.
"This tomb is said to hold the mysteries of ice and cold. We know very little about it as in order to even open this tomb one already needs to be truly proficient with ice magic’s. The starting price for this item is 20 gold."
Violet instantly noticed Luna’s eyes opening wide with clear interest, she could feel through the bond that Luna was feeling some kind of connection to the book and as such she had absolutely no issue with buying the item.
Apparently other people were also quite interested in securing this book, including the city lord with made Violet smirk in ammusement.
The price of the item rapidly rose, swiftly surpassing 100 gold, then rising in 10 gold jumps. It seemed to be stuck in a three way bid between the city lord, another fairly high ranked noble and an unassuming man sat down below.
By the time that the price reached 300 gold the bids became slightly sparser, each new bid seemingly been deliberated over carefully. As whilst this item was clearly unique and powerful, their was no guarantee that they would be able to use it.
Saddly for them that was not a concern for Violet and she, in her by now usual manner dropped an amount of gold that instantly shut down all competition.
The city lord had just raised the price to 330 gold when once again Violet’s voice cut through all others as she pronounced her bid. "500 gold."
Again it was simple, short and devastatingly effective. No one else seemed able to counter or raise the bid and before long Violet was once again the prows owner of another item.
Some other items that caught Violet’s attention were a enchanted hair clip that apparently kept all of your hair contained and knott free. She instantly dropped 100 gold on it even when its starting price was only 2 gold coins. The reason she so fervently bought it was that she still found her slightly frustrating, plus it was a beautiful royal blue in colour that she thought looked lovely.
Another was a enchanted pan of all things, it went up for 40 silver and Violet bought it for 10 gold.
Next was something that was a truly fascinating item, or at least it was for Violet.
On the trolly a small plain leather pouch was being presented. "Now this here is a truly unique item, the like of which our enchanters have never seen before and likely will never see again. For this is technically a spatial storage pouch, except its function is slightly different. For you see this item does not technically store anything, instead it summons them.
Now what does it summon you may ask? Well that is what makes this item a truly novel item. For this pouch will summon an endless array of charcuterie snacks. From cured meat to precious cheese and freshly baked bread. Whenever you may desire a snack this pouch will always provide. We shall start the bidding at 15 gold!"
The crowd seemed entirely stunned at this item, its function was just so utterly random that people didn’t quite know how to respond to it at first. Still the more that the hostess spoke the more interested that the crowd seemed to become.
Once she announced the starting bid people began shouting their own intending to claim for themselves this wonderfully random item.
Saddly for everyone involved in bidding for the pouch they were in fact competing against a dragon, a dragon that found the prospect of infinate food something that she refused to give up.
Due to that Violet may have gone slightly overboard with her initial bid upon understanding what a treasure that item was. "1 platinum!"
Silence descended upon the hall as people stared up at her in utter shock, particularly given that the bid before that was only 60 gold.
Even the hostess seemed to stumble at the ridiculous price increase for such a peculiar item. Still she did not let that keep her stunned for long and soon enough Violet was the proud owner of perhaps the most expensive yet infinate charcuterie board in existence.
