Chapter 696 - 557: Second Update
When Shi Wangyue came back with the water, Ning Youguang had already turned on the bedroom light. She was leaning against the headboard, looking at him with a soft smile that left Shi Wangyue completely confused.
"Why do you look so dazed?"
He walked to the bedside, squeezed Ning Youguang’s soft, pink cheeks under the light first, then finally brought the cup to her lips.
Ning Youguang took a small sip of water and shook her head. "No more."
Shi Wangyue set the water down by the bed. "Alright, tell me, why are you awake?"
Someone who wakes up thirsty for water—how could they possibly drink only that little? Ning Youguang froze for a second, then slapped her fair palm to her forehead. She hadn’t expected her lie to be punctured so easily. She could only confess honestly, "Fine, I had a nightmare."
Shi Wangyue leaned over to her, gently took her hand away, and asked with concern, "What kind of nightmare?"
Ning Youguang quickly ran through it in her head. Those past-life experiences were absolutely off-limits, and those bits and pieces about Fang Han and her garbage husband were definitely off-limits too.
Put together, there was nothing pleasant or joyful in either of those. She didn’t want to tell the completely clueless Shi Wangyue about those awful people and things, because those were exactly the things she didn’t want to keep in her heart. She didn’t even want them to brush against him.
So she picked something she could talk about. "Fang Han is getting married. She sent me a wedding invitation."
"Fang Han is getting married?" Shi Wangyue’s memory had always been good. Even though Ning Youguang hadn’t mentioned this name to him for many years, he still quickly recalled who she was. "Your... aunt’s cousin from your hometown?"
"Yeah." Ning Youguang nodded.
"Oh." As he quickly remembered who she was, what came to Shi Wangyue’s mind along with it was his strongest impression of her: a few scenes from Ning Youguang’s thank-you banquet after the college entrance exam, and absolutely no good feelings.
Not that she was unbearably annoying or something; he just didn’t want to waste even a glance on her. "What does that have to do with your nightmare?"
His tone was calm. He had zero interest in the news that Fang Han was getting married, but he was intent on getting to the bottom of Ning Youguang’s nightmare.
Ning Youguang couldn’t help but chuckle. "Aren’t you curious who Fang Han is marrying?"
"Who is she marrying?" Shi Wangyue very obediently followed her lead and asked, but his voice was utterly indifferent.
As if to say, I’m only asking because you told me to ask.
I really don’t care about this at all.
Ning Youguang thought about it. She hadn’t planned to let him know too much anyway, so she switched to an airy, teasing tone. "I don’t know who exactly. I heard he’s from a wealthy family in Hong Kong, but I’ve never met him. No idea if he’s round or flat or what he looks like, and apparently they’ve only been dating for two months."
"Then why the nightmare?"
"..."
"Because she wants me to bring you to her wedding. One at home and one here." Ning Youguang sighed. "Just thinking about it makes me tired."
"So that’s why you had a nightmare?" Shi Wangyue chuckled softly.
Ning Youguang nodded lightly. "Anyway, I’m not going. When the time comes, I’ll just ask Auntie to take the cash gift over for me."
"Excellent idea." Shi Wangyue praised.
Then he climbed into bed, wrapped his arms around her, and rubbed his face against her shoulder in a pitiful way. "Other people date for two months and get married. Shouldn’t you give me an official status already?"
Ning Youguang leaned lazily against him, her voice gentle and casual. "Once we’re both thirty-two, as long as you want to, we can go get the certificate anytime."
"Why do we still have to wait that long?" Shi Wangyue felt a little excited inside, but also a bit disgruntled.
Excited because she had finally given a precise arrangement about marriage. Disgruntled because, "Didn’t you say you’d consider it when you’re thirty? How did it suddenly get pushed back another two years?"
Ning Youguang looked at the huffy child in front of her, her brows and eyes soft. "I did consider it, and I even moved it up by a year."
"..." That really was irrefutable.
Shi Wangyue rolled over and pounced on Ning Youguang, gritting his teeth. "I’ll remember this. On your thirty-second birthday, we’re going to get the marriage certificate."
"Okay." Half a year older than Shi Wangyue, Ning Youguang was holding back laughter so hard she was almost out of breath. She tried to push him away. "I can’t breathe."
But it was like Shi Wangyue was holding his breath on purpose as he pressed down on her even more, forcing Ning Youguang to completely relax her whole body just to survive.
He only kept his weight on her for a short while before he stopped, then instead leaned down to kiss her lips.
Kissing and kissing, the two of them soon got lost in each other.
After a long time—
Shi Wangyue, drenched in sweat, sat up. "You lie down a bit longer. I’m going to take a shower."
Just from his voice you could hear the lazy satisfaction that saturated his whole body after intense pleasure.
"I want to shower too." Ning Youguang struggled to sit up, her voice soft and languid.
Shi Wangyue chuckled, turned back, and scooped up Ning Youguang, who had just lifted the thin blanket.
...
Sunlight streamed through the thin clouds, bathing everything in the world. Dew in the little garden outside dripped down from the leaves.
Wrapped in a bathrobe, Ning Youguang opened the window, letting the fresh, pleasant air pour into the room. Even though she hadn’t slept well because of the nightmare last night, she still felt clear-headed and refreshed now.
She turned around and saw Shi Wangyue, a towel wrapped around his waist, bare-chested, standing by the bed tidying up the sheets.
The morning light filtered through the faint mist in the air and fell across his face. His brow bone was strong, his features deep. He clearly carried a hint of early autumn coolness, yet because of what he was doing, there was an added touch of down-to-earth domestic warmth.
"I feel really lucky to be with you." The emotion rose from deep inside Ning Youguang and slipped out of her mouth.
"Why do you say that?" Shi Wangyue spread his arms, briskly shaking out the quilt he’d just put on.
Ning Youguang walked over, took one corner of the quilt, and helped him fold the comforter he’d just shaken flat. "I just feel that if I weren’t the one you loved, if I were just some irrelevant passerby, even just seeing you like this, I’d still think you’re really great and admire you a lot."
Shi Wangyue chuckled. "That’s a pretty big compliment, Ms. Ning."
It might not be completely objective, but the stance was right.
I love you because you’re my lover; I love you because you’re you, because you’re Shi Wangyue.
"Before this, I often heard people say that no matter how tiring work is, once they get home and see the person they love, all their unhappiness gets healed. I never really believed that."
"Why not?"
"Because I trust my professional training. I think unless it’s a professional psychological counselor, how could just seeing someone heal your own psychological issues? It’s not scientific at all."
But now she’d realized that she herself was doing a lot of things that weren’t scientific in the least.
Who was she supposed to complain to about that?
"Rationality and emotion don’t speak on the same wavelength."
"You’re right." Ning Youguang’s brows lifted playfully. "I’ve now experienced that for myself."1314
