Chapter 301: Interstellar Undercurrents
Chapter 301: Interstellar Undercurrents
The Spiral of Fate was utterly destroyed, and the universe returned to a brief period of tranquility. Ares, Selena, and Wagner returned to their ship, traversing the interstellar void, preparing to return to the Guardians' headquarters. However, the closer they got to home, the heavier their hearts became, as if an unhealed shadow hung in the air.
“We saved the universe, but it doesn’t feel like it’s over yet.” Wagner leaned back in his chair, casually twirling his battle axe, but his smile was no longer as relaxed as before.
Selena stared intently at the data on the control panel, her fingers flying across the keyboard. Her brow was furrowed, as if she were trying to solve some difficult problem.
Ares stood by the cabin window, gazing at the distant stars, his eyes as deep as the night: "Every time we think it's over, a new crisis always follows. The balance of the universe is fragile, and we may have only uncovered the tip of a larger conspiracy."
Selena suddenly looked up, her expression unusually serious: "Ares, Wagner, I've discovered some anomalous data. These energy fluctuations don't belong to the remnants of the Fate Spiral... they're more like... signals from within the Interstellar Alliance."
Wagner frowned. "You mean, there's something wrong with our own alliance?"
Ares's gaze sharpened further. He knew that the Guardians were not a monolithic entity, especially after experiencing multiple cosmic crises, which had made internal power struggles and ideological differences increasingly apparent.
“We must go back and take a look,” Ares said calmly. “This threat may be more complex than any enemy we have faced before.”
The spaceship traversed the final interstellar jump, finally arriving at the Guardians' headquarters—Ring City. This was the most advanced space station in the universe, hovering in orbit around a star, a symbol of cosmic order and peace. However, as they approached Ring City, the sight before them instantly put the three to their senses.
The Star Ring City's defense system is fully activated, with numerous warships hovering in space and defensive turrets pointing in all directions, as if preparing for a war that could break out at any moment.
“This is not right.” Selena’s voice was low and tense. “The defense system has never been this tense, unless… a major crisis has occurred inside Star Ring City.”
Wagner gripped his battle axe, his eyes blazing with fighting spirit: "I told you long ago, those bureaucrats within the Alliance would cause trouble sooner or later. It seems that this time we might be dealing with more than just foreign monsters."
Ares did not answer immediately; his gaze was fixed on the central command tower of Star Ring City, the location of the Alliance's highest council. At this moment, it was enveloped in a pale blue energy shield, indicating a clear state of isolation.
“We must get into the command tower,” Ares said calmly. “Find Sophia and Kane, and find out what happened.”
The spaceship approached Star Ring City, but before they could send an identification signal, the defense system automatically locked onto their ship.
"They think we're the enemy?" Wagner's eyes widened. "Are these guys crazy?"
Selena quickly adjusted the ship's course to avoid the oncoming energy barrage: "It seems there's really a big problem within the Alliance; they're even attacking us indiscriminately."
Ares calmly issued the order: "Prepare for a forced landing. We don't have time to deal with them."
Thanks to Selena's skillful maneuvering, the spaceship successfully evaded the defense system's tracking, broke through the outer defenses of Star Ring City, and forcibly landed on the docking platform of the command tower. The three quickly disembarked, weapons in hand, and entered the command tower.
However, upon entering the command tower, they found the situation inside to be even more chaotic than outside. The corridors reeked of burning metal, and the floor was littered with broken mechanical debris and weapons. Clearly, a fierce battle had taken place inside.
“This is no ordinary conflict,” Selena said in a low voice, her gaze sweeping over the scorch marks on the wall. “High-energy weapons were used here, and in some places the structure has even been torn apart by dimensional rifts.”
Ares's expression grew increasingly grim: "We must find Sophia and Kane as soon as possible. They are key figures in the alliance, and if even they are dragged into this chaos, the situation will only worsen."
The three followed the main passage of the command tower and finally found Sophia and Kane in the ruins of the council hall. They bore obvious signs of battle, clearly having just experienced a fierce conflict.
“Ares! Selena! Wagner!” Sofia’s face showed a complicated expression when she saw them. “You’re finally back.”
Kane's gaze grew even colder. He stepped forward and said in a low voice, "You've come at the right time. The Alliance has completely split, with some members attempting to take over Ring City and use the remaining energy of the Spiral of Fate to reshape the cosmic order."
Ares's gaze was sharp as a knife: "Who is pulling the strings behind all this?"
Sofia gritted her teeth, a flash of anger in her eyes: "It's the Arbiter. He never truly accepted our ideals; he began plotting this coup long before we destroyed the End Protocol."
Wagner roared, his battle axe spinning in his hand: "I knew that guy was up to no good! What do we do now? Charge in and drag him out?"
Ares pondered for a moment, then said firmly, "No, direct conflict will only make the situation more chaotic. We need to find the Arbiter's hiding place and expose his conspiracy in order to truly end this crisis."
Selena nodded in agreement and quickly accessed the main control system of Ring City, attempting to track the Arbiter's movements. However, her face soon turned pale: "Damn it, the Arbiter has initiated Ring City's self-destruct program."
The alarm system in Star Ring City suddenly went off, the entire space station began to shake violently, and warning lights on the walls flashed a blinding red light. The countdown to the self-destruct program appeared on every display screen; less than twenty minutes remained.
"He wants to destroy the entire Star Ring City!" Sophia gritted her teeth, her eyes flashing with rage. "He's insane!"
Kane clenched his fist, his voice low and menacing: "We must stop him, or the entire league will be wiped out."
Ares swiftly issued orders: "Split up. Selena, you're in charge of shutting down the self-destruct mechanism; Wagner, you and I will go find the Arbitrator. Sophia and Kane, protect the other members of the Council and ensure their safe evacuation."
Selena nodded and immediately ran towards the control room. Wagner followed closely behind Ares, speeding towards the location where the Arbiter had last appeared.
Ares and Wagner eventually found the Arbiter at the core reactor of Ring City. He stood in the center of the reactor, with a massive energy device behind him, injecting the remaining energy of the Spiral of Fate into Ring City's main engine.
“Ares, Wagner.” The Arbiter turned around, a cold smile on his face. “You’ve finally arrived.”
Ares drew his rune sword, his gaze icy: "What are you doing? You're going to destroy the entire Star Ring City!"
The Arbiter's smile grew even colder: "Destroy? No, I'm rebuilding. Ring City is just the beginning. The universe needs a new order, and your existence will only hinder that process."
Wagner roared and charged at the Arbiter, swinging his battle axe. However, the Arbiter's power far exceeded expectations; he unleashed a powerful energy wave that repelled Wagner.
Ares did not hesitate; his rune sword sliced through the air, aiming straight for the Arbiter's heart. The battle between the two was like a collision of stars, erupting with a deafening roar.
Meanwhile, Selena races against time in the control room, trying to shut down the self-destruct program. However, the Arbiter's defenses are extremely complex, and each breach brings new traps and obstacles.
"I won't let you succeed." Selena gritted her teeth, her fingers flying across the keyboard, and finally managed to shut down the self-destruct program at the last minute.
Under the combined attack of Ares and Wagner, the Arbiter finally revealed a weakness. Ares seized the opportunity, his rune sword thrusting straight at the Arbiter's chest. A dazzling light burst forth, and the Arbiter's figure collapsed in the light.
Ring City returned to calm, but the three knew that this internal strife was merely the prelude to a deeper crisis in the universe.
Ares gripped the rune sword, his gaze deep: "The balance of the universe has been restored, but new challenges lie ahead."
Wagner laughed and patted them on the shoulder: "No matter what monsters come our way, we're ready!"
Selena smiled and nodded: "We are the guardians, and we will never stop moving forward."
The spaceship launched, heading towards unknown stars. The guardians knew that although the battle was over, their journey had only just begun.
