Chapter 311 - 183: Taking the Postgraduate Entrance Exam
When You Su returned to the mountain, Fairy Wangshu was still tending to the peach tree she had been so fondly caring for.
After all, her greatest hope for this tree was to let her junior brother taste the juicy peaches she had planted herself.
As autumn arrived, the tips of some tender leaves on the peach tree began to turn yellow.
Fairy Wangshu looked at them with reluctance, as if blaming herself for not taking good care of the peach tree.
But sadness aside, she briskly pruned these small leaves, a skill she had learned from the Third Elder in tree cultivation.
"Senior sister is incredible."
You Su stood to the side, marveling at his senior sister’s exquisite swordsmanship. Even though he prided himself on his advanced Sword Control Skill, he admitted he couldn’t achieve cutting only a single leaf among the clutter without touching the others like her.
You Su wouldn’t attribute this to his inability to see; he just assumed his cultivation wasn’t sufficient yet.
Thinking this way, he realized it had indeed been a long time since he had trained properly.
"Junior brother is back!"
Fairy Wangshu seemed to only just notice You Su, lifting the Jade Rabbit Mask that covered her face, blinking her eyes in surprise.
She even took a couple of small steps toward You Su, wanting to be closer to him.
You Su smiled helplessly, saying, "Senior sister’s act is too phony, given your level of perception, you should have sensed me when I first stepped onto the peak."
But Fairy Wangshu shook her head and sincerely said:
"I’m not acting."
Fairy Wangshu, with her Pure Heart, could see through the lies of others and naturally wouldn’t lie herself.
You Su, of course, understood this principle, and quickly asked with concern:
"Is something wrong, senior sister?"
Fairy Wangshu shook her head.
You Su furrowed his brow, wondering if something was wrong with himself. Could an unknown sinister force be concealing his aura, making him even evade the detection of Feather Transformation Realm cultivators?
As he pondered nervously, Fairy Wangshu cradled a small flower entwined in her white hair, affectionately stroking its petals:
"Xiaohua said her sister told her that when waiting for someone, it’s for the moment of surprise when they arrive. If I use my Divine Sense to see you first, it wouldn’t be as surprising when I see you with my eyes. The person being waited for wouldn’t know the wait was difficult. So I deliberately withdrew my perception and found something to do until you arrived, for a greater surprise. Although you were only away for half a day, I wanted you to know how arduous the wait was."
Listening to the young girl’s plain and murmured words, You Su’s heart was stirred.
The girl, using the simplest language, straightforwardly told him: I had such a hard time waiting for you...
You Su could no longer focus on how the impish little white fish had such insight, feeling only compassion for the lonely fairy before him.
"I will always be with senior sister," You Su solemnly promised.
"Mhm!" Fairy Wangshu nodded emphatically, her blue eyes narrowing with a smile.
Suddenly, You Su came to his senses and felt regret.
As a junior brother, speaking such words to his senior sister wasn’t quite proper. Why should there be an unbreakable bond between senior and junior siblings?
He had just faced unimaginable choices outside and realized upon returning to Lotus Peak that it was a place he could lower all defenses and sharpness. Moved by his senior sister, he spoke impulsively, making an impertinent vow.
Even if his senior sister didn’t understand the weight of his words, he shouldn’t have spoken so carelessly. His senior sister, innocent of worldly affairs, treated him well only because he was the first to enter her life. He liked his senior sister, but it didn’t rise to the level of romantic love; her feelings for him should be the same.
If he used this as an excuse to deceive her with empty words, how would it differ from tricking an innocent girl?
You Su silently blamed himself, then hastily explained: "Senior sister, I have a chance to become the Divine Son of the Exorcism Bureau and fight alongside you. This way, we can always be together in battle."
Hearing this, Fairy Wangshu did not react with the happiness You Su had imagined.
You Su detected this, suspecting his senior sister had noticed his sleight of hand in reducing the concept of ’being together forever’ to just fighting.
"Does junior brother really want to become this Divine Son?"
So the reason for his senior sister’s unhappiness was concern for him...
What would it matter if he didn’t want to, he had no choice in the matter.
Feeling his Sea of Consciousness enveloped by his senior sister’s gentle white light, You Su suddenly felt that if he said he didn’t want to, this presence would certainly fight for him.
"I...perhaps I am willing."
Moved, You Su gave his answer. This too came from his heart, so he feared not his senior sister’s ability to see through human lies; he genuinely wanted to share the burdens that weighed on the girl’s shoulders.
"I am not willing."
Fairy Wangshu lowered her gaze, raised her hand, staring blankly at her white-as-snow palm, and murmured to herself:
"I don’t like being this Divine Maiden, but everyone tells me, as one with Innate Purity, I was born to slay demons. Yet, in truth, I don’t like this."
Though she claimed she was unwilling, she still took this path; even someone as strong as senior sister had no choice.
Heavenly Dao granted you abilities and with it, corresponding responsibilities. Even if senior sister disliked it, she chose to shoulder her own responsibilities.
"If senior sister doesn’t like it, I’ll just kill them for you."
You Su clenched his fist, believing that his senior sister’s happiness was far more important than her destiny.
Though he couldn’t currently free senior sister from this role, the only thing he could do was genuinely share her burden.
