Chapter 401 Johnny Blaze
"Therefore, I usually choose to get drunk so that I can get a good night's sleep."
The man in the leather jacket turned his face to the side, the fiery sunset disappearing from his eyes, and he returned to his dejected state.
"If you fill a motorcycle with gas, you'll see more and go farther; if you fill a brain with whiskey, it'll have the opposite effect."
Connors gradually realized who the man in the leather jacket was. To show him enough respect, Connors pulled Wanda, who was dressed as a nurse, out from under the table and made her sit down next to him.
He then began to listen attentively to the man in the leather jacket's story:
"I have a wife and children, Hayden Falls is a beautiful and safe place, I have enough money, and a big house..."
"But something always slowly erodes me like termites, hollowing me out, and every hollowed-out part is filled with anger, sadness, and discontent."
"Thank you for listening to my story so far, doctor. I think it's getting late, and I should go home now."
The man in the leather jacket got up to leave.
"Before you leave, I hope you can say what you truly want to say when you come to this counseling room. Perhaps I really can help you."
It was completely dark outside. There were no lights in the counseling room, but Connors' eyes shone brightly in the darkness.
Perhaps it was Connors' confident words that moved him; after a long silence, the man in the leather jacket sat back down on the sofa.
"Okay, let me start from the beginning."
"My name is Johnny Blazer. A few months ago, I had a motorcycle accident and rolled fifteen yards."
"I have a skull fracture, severe concussion, subdural hematoma, and severe cerebral edema."
"Theoretically, I shouldn't be sitting in front of you telling you all this while I'm still alive; I should be lying in a coffin. But perhaps the hospital's medical skills were superb, because I recovered and was discharged after two surgeries."
Connors' ears twitched. He could clearly hear that in a park about three hundred meters away from the counseling room, Zatanna was performing magic for the demons of Demon Town.
Apart from the only human sitting on the sofa in the town, almost all the demons in Demon Town had gathered there.
"Wanda, do me a favor," Connors whispered to Wanda. "Go to Zuckerberg's side, you two can look after each other."
Wanda nodded, and before leaving, she wiped her mouth, as if afraid that Zatanna would smell something.
"Sorry, you can continue," Connors said to Johnny, the man in the leather jacket.
“Okay, doctor,” Johnny said. “Things have been wrong ever since then—physically, emotionally, mentally—nothing’s right.”
"Don't you even believe you've recovered so quickly?" Connors asked.
Johnny didn't answer the question; he was somewhat annoyed by Connors's sudden question, but quickly realized his situation.
Take a few deep breaths to force yourself to calm down:
"I started experiencing amnesia, anxiety, delusions, hallucinations—and became sensitive and angry."
"Sometimes I think, if only we could take the skull out and send it to a repair shop for lubrication and filtration, to remove the rust, and to weld the gaps back in."
"Sometimes things would change in front of me, and I would mistake the ice cream in the little boy's hand for something disgusting and snatch it away and throw it on the ground."
"He mistook the neighbor's barking puppy for a bat-like demon, then snapped its neck and stuffed it into the mailbox. 'I have children, I have a family, I can't go on like this. Doctor, can you help me?'"
Connors nodded, still looking confident.
But the moment he nodded, the scar on the side of Johnny's head suddenly split open, and a bloodshot eye popped out, staring straight at Connors.
"Can you really help me?" Johnny seemed a little excited. He stood up to walk towards Connors, but then sat back down with a thud.
He kept repeating the phrase "There are no monsters in the world."
Connors noticed Johnny's odd behavior and followed Johnny's gaze to look behind him. There was nothing there except a painting hanging on the wall in the dark.
The painting depicts a skinned pig being roasted over a fire, but unfortunately, apart from the bloody and horrific scene, it lacks any of the delicious flavor that roasted pig should have.
The pig's head is suspended in mid-air by a chain in the painting, with one eye looking out of the frame, as if it is staring at someone outside.
"It's just a painting, don't be afraid," Connors said to Johnny, turning back to him.
"That painting"
Johnny's gaze remained fixed on the painting.
Connors turned his head again and saw that the picture had changed. The roasted pig was still in the flames, but a ferocious giant wolf emerged from the darkness of the picture. The beast was gnawing on the skinned body while glaring at Connors.
Connors remained calm. A wisp of black smoke silently slipped into the frame from the darkness behind him, turning the painting completely black inside and out in the blink of an eye.
"Okay, about yours—"
After resolving the issue of the hanging painting, Connors turned back and saw Johnny lunging at him with clenched fists, shouting:
There are no monsters in the world, absolutely none!
Connors neither dodged nor avoided the punch, but Johnny slammed his fist hard on the desk, leaving cracks and blood flowing out immediately.
It's not Johnny who's bleeding, it's the table that's bleeding.
"I'm going crazy, I must be going crazy," Johnny stammered, looking at the blood seeping from the crack in the table and taking a few steps back on his knees.
"You and your wife are very much in love, and you have two lovely children. As your therapist, may I come to your home with you?"
Connors seemed oblivious to the oddity of the table, and instead walked around to Johnny and spoke.
"What are you up to?" Johnny took a step back.
"It's not malicious anyway," Connors said.
Johnny fell silent again, then gritted his teeth and finally agreed:
"no problem."
He turned and walked out of the counseling room, arriving at the main street of Hayden Falls, which is also known as Devil Town.
Connors followed him out.
"There are no monsters in the world," Johnny seemed to be hypnotizing himself. He felt his delusions starting again. Before him was a street ablaze with flames and blood. He saw a passerby pull out his intestines and hand them to the restaurant owner.
He noticed that the gardener's scissors were actually two thin, long fingernails.
He saw a group of children with hollow eye sockets playing hide-and-seek by the roadside. "There are no monsters in the world," Johnny muttered to himself again, then looked at Connors.
Connors remained expressionless, seemingly oblivious to the horrific scenes, as if they were merely his delusions.
Passing by the park where Zatanna's magic show was taking place, and crossing a green belt, Johnny brought Connors home.
"dad!"
As soon as he opened the door, Connors saw a fat, purple-skinned rat crawling over from the ground and stretching out its paws toward Johnny.
There was also a slender, frog-like witch-like figure with disheveled hair, squatting on the ground, with another little devil in Johnny's house.
"vomit!"
Seeing his child and wife transformed into demonic figures, Johnny clenched his fists again. He rushed into the house, opened the refrigerator, and downed a bottle of liquor, which made him feel a little better.
"Johnny!" His wife ran over, looking at Johnny drinking heavily, and complained, "You scared me."
"You guys scared me too," Johnny said.
"—You're crazy, you really should see a doctor," Johnny's wife said. At that moment, in Johnny's eyes, his wife and children had returned to normal.
"What if I'm not crazy?" Johnny grabbed his wife's hand. "What if what I saw was the truth, and everyone else is the one who's crazy?"
"You're hurting me, Johnny." His wife shook off Johnny's hand.
"I noticed the ring on your hand a while ago. And I don't remember giving you a ring at all," Johnny stepped forward and pressed.
His wife retreated again and again, finally settling down to Connors' side.
Connors grabbed Johnny's wife's hand without hesitation and looked at the ring:
"The craftsmanship is exquisite. I'd like to know if this is a silver ring or a gold ring?"
Johnny's head suddenly twitched and twisted, his face contorting:
"Get your hand off my wife!"
"What if your judgment is correct—she's not your wife, and this isn't your town?" Connors looked intently at Johnny.
Johnny's head twitched again, and the skull hidden beneath his skin nearly burst out.
