Chapter 215 The Unexpected Gold Brick
"You seem to know Harley Osborne? She's a friend of mine and Peter's."
Gwen spoke cautiously, not surprised that Connors knew about "Harry Osborn," but curious why Connors would specifically mention this person.
In her opinion, besides being rich and having some common topics with her, what was there about Harry Osborne that would warrant the attention of a guy like Connors with all sorts of strange abilities?
"Wait a minute, this guy has given me a problem the moment he showed up, forcing me to bring him back to my apartment. Does he really seem to be broke?"
"Once superheroes go astray, they never have to worry about the source of money; they have all sorts of illegal means to get the huge sums of money they want."
"And this guy might be even poorer than me, and he specifically mentioned Osborn—is he going to rob someone? Or is he looking for a job?"
Gwen silently muttered to herself, while Connors, standing beside her, had no idea that in Gwen's eyes he had become a penniless pauper.
He simply used his "telepathy" to discover that "Harry Osborn" was in the city, and then gave Gwen a task:
Do you have any plans for the future?
Gwen instinctively wanted to say she was going to work, but thinking of the dilapidated pizzeria, she changed her mind and said:
"I need to continue investigating 'Dr. Lizard.' There wasn't much progress in the sewers today."
"Then while you're busy fighting crime, you also have to worry about not being able to eat because you don't have money," Connors teased her. "I've found you a place where you can eat to your heart's content without any worries."
Gwen is indeed hungry. She went straight home after catching Connors last night, and was late this morning without eating. When she got to the pizzeria, she found it was gone.
Even now, Gwen's stomach is still protruding; she definitely needs to eat something.
"Where? Are you taking me to a buffet? The kind where you don't have to pay?"
"Harry Osborne is hosting a class reunion tomorrow, and I'd like you to go too," Connors said.
Just as he was using "telepathy" to find this little green goblin, the guy was instructing the butler to arrange this class reunion.
"So how are we going to solve our dinner problem tonight?" Gwen rubbed her stomach and whispered, trying to keep her voice down and burn fewer calories.
Connors touched his pockets and found that he didn't have a single penny on him.
Gwen watched with anticipation as Connors rummaged through his pockets, then was greatly disappointed; just as she had imagined, he was a penniless pauper.
"I only have a few cents left," Gwen said, patting her own pockets with a tearful expression.
Connors' body no longer needs to eat to get nutrition, but Gwen's cannot.
"I've always had good luck—how about this, try turning around in place with your eyes closed and then walking three steps forward?
As he spoke, he subtly used his "reconstruction" ability.
Gwen looked at Connors with suspicion, then spun around a few times before taking three steps in a random direction.
There's nothing here.
"Right under your feet," Connors reminded Dougwen as she moved her foot and discovered a small gold brick deeply embedded in the soil.
"This is gold?!" Gwen exclaimed. Without Connors's prompting, Gwen quickly dug the gold nugget out of the soil and checked the serial number on it.
Connors' "reconstruction" ability can change the molecular structure of matter. He hadn't specifically studied what the molecular structure of gold was like, but he just casually used "telepathy" to find someone and recreate a gold brick exactly like theirs.
To perfectly deceive Gwen, Connors even changed a number on the serial number engraved on the gold bar.
He had expected Gwen to excitedly raise the gold brick and quote from Shakespeare's *Timon of Athens*, but Gwen clearly had a different idea from Connors:
"This number is one of the gold bars that the bank publicly announced a few months ago, which was absconded with by 'Dr. Otto'?"
! "
Who is Dr. Otto? Connors quickly used the super-mental abilities granted by "human limits" to recall the matter and found the corresponding figure in his vast memory:
"Otto Gunther Octavius" is also known as "Doctor Octopus"!
"So, are we going to spend this windfall now?" Connors asked cautiously, already having a certain idea in mind.
As expected, Gwen held a gold bar in her hand, and her eyes, hidden behind the mask, showed no desire for money.
"No! I'm going to return this lost gold bar to the bank, and add 'Dr. Otto' to my to-do list."
"May I ask one more question? What was Dr. Otto's purpose in robbing the bank of the gold bars?" Connors asked.
Gwen carefully recalled what had happened a few months ago and said:
"He—I thought he had died in the accidental explosion during the last public display."
"But he didn't die. Instead, he suddenly reappeared one day, and the four mechanical arms had become one with him."
"He wanted to buy equipment on the black market, but lacking funds, he robbed a bank—"
"But I never found him."
Little Green Goblin, Dr. Lizard, Kraven the Hunter, and Doctor Octopus—that makes a total of four.
Connors counted them on his fingers one by one, deciding to do things one at a time:
"Then I'll go with you to the bank to return this gold bar? You really aren't going to spend it?"
Gwen shook her head.
Connors didn't care. With him around, he was determined not to let her challenge the "Evil Six" on an empty stomach.
Putting aside other abilities, "Green of All Things" can easily manipulate plants to grow an acre of rice, some vegetables, and even cook a meal using her culinary skills.
The bank that was robbed by "Dr. Octopus" was not far from the two of them; it was only a few minutes' walk away.
When Gwen brought the gold bar, whose serial number had been altered by Connors but which unexpectedly matched the serial number of one of the bars stolen by "Doctor Octopus," to the bank, the bank staff practically wanted to kowtow to her on the spot.
"Thank you so much, you're such honest girls!"
Gwen certainly wouldn't go to the bank in her battle armor; she had already changed back into her normal clothes and was somewhat shyly accepting the bank clerk's thanks.
With a heavy heart, Gwen watched as the bank staff took the gold bar for testing, then sighed and turned to leave.
"These lost gold bars were all investment products purchased by the young master of 'Osborn Enterprises.' Our bank has already dismissed most of its employees because of this. Thank you!"
"Are we involved with 'Little Green Goblin' again?" Connors looked at the staff in surprise.
The ordinary-looking bank clerk, dressed in a suit, with his hair tied up, approached Gwen with a small wad of cash in his hands.
"Our bank has publicly displayed the serial numbers of the lost gold bars and promised a reward to anyone who finds them!"
Gwen took the small amount of cash with a blank expression, blinking her eyes:
"I think that was mentioned, but I forgot."
(Don't compare this to reality. I don't know if there's a reward for finding a lost gold bar in a bank, I've never robbed one.)
