Conrad fell silent, listening to Mortalian's breathing.

【destiny.】

He uttered the word softly.

All sinners will eventually face the judgment of fate; no one can escape it. Even emperors who are like gods will eventually face judgment, as will their self-proclaimed righteous brothers.

If there are no executors in the galaxy to judge them... then they will punish each other.

Inside the room, Mortarian's cacophony of laughter was far more jarring than Makado's sighs.

Just as Mortarian was about to make a sarcastic remark, Macado raised his hand, signaling Mortarian to shut up.

The Lord of Death fell silent again, displeased.

“You’ve been too influenced by Nostrlam, Conrad.”

Makado spoke calmly.

"Nostrand made you a complete pessimist, and its shaping of you even distorted the Emperor's original design for you."

Koz laughed.

So what is the Empire going to do to me, old man? Like the brothers who disappeared?

He extended his right index finger and drew a line in the air across his neck.

The fingers that Mortarian had broken before had long since grown back with sharp, pointed nails.

Those who sin will be punished, and I am but a worthless defective product; death is a fitting end for me.

He laughed, trembling, but was it more out of fear?

Or is it because the death he foretold in his prophecy was not like this?

Or perhaps it's because he really wants to be punished?

He thoroughly savored those gazes: Macardo's calm yet suppressed look of disappointment, Mortarian's resentful and madman-like gaze, and Horus's serious expression of pity and loathing.

After a long pause, Makado sighed.

“Fate can be changed, and choices can be made. I originally thought that Mortarian had shown you another possibility.”

Mortarian's horrified and disgusted gaze now fell on Makado, but Makado ignored it; he had been used to it ever since Mortarian's time studying in Terra.

The old man's eyes calmly gazed at Conrad Coz, a golden flame burning quietly in his eyes.

"You want to forget it? No, you still need to learn it."

Konrad Coz opened his mouth.

A ripple suddenly appeared on Conrad Coates's Lake of Memories, and it began to spread outwards, forcing Coates to sink into the icy depths of the lake.

He sank down and slowly suffocated.

He thought of Sai, who was on the verge of death.

Is it choked up? That child who always looks worried and can't sleep.

Beneath the pitch-black lake, Conrad Coates opened his eyes wide, struggling to slice through the seaweed made of dead men's hair.

He found Sai's remains. Some of the bodies were missing half of their heads, some had a large hole in their chests, and some were very, very old. He parted the hair and saw Sai's extremely aged face.

Is Sevita dead?

He asked himself, but the voice that rang out was not his; it was more malevolent, as if it had been soaked in poison for a thousand years.

He must be dead.

He thought, "Sai is not immortal; he has his own lifespan."

But... he turned around and saw the underwater mountain range formed by the piles of corpses.

Which one is his offspring, Sai?

Which one is it?

Does he have a choice?

He began frantically searching through the swollen, waterlogged corpses. The icy water filled his lungs, and his respiratory tract burned as if poison gas had entered his lungs, screaming inside his body.

The heavy water pressed down on him; he was dying. Wounds appeared on his torso; he saw the skin on his face peeling away piece by piece, until finally the tip of his nose fell off—

It's too late! No, it's too late!

Finally, Conrad Coz grabbed at the relatively intact, aged body of Severta and clung to it, desperately trying to rise to the surface. The men he had killed grew hair and hands at the bottom of the lake, screaming and hoping to drag him into the deepest nightmare.

He struggled to float upwards, the water rippling around him like scythes, carving wounds and tearing his flesh.

They're almost there, almost there! The ripples on the water were reflected in Coz's eyes...

Coz's pupils suddenly dilated—

Above the water, boundless darkness pressed down, carrying a resolute determination to destroy everything.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!

Below him lies judgment of his sins, above him lies the end of the world that will destroy him. What can he do? What should he do?!

Fate never left him a way out! He was destined for destruction! And his innocent offspring would suffer the same fate!

Conrad Coates stopped there in despair, feeling like a floating corpse, hovering not far below the surface of the water...

His wrist tightened.

Conrad Coz looked down sharply, and Severta's lifeless body gripped his wrist.

Sai doesn't want to die yet.

Below lies death, and above... lies destruction that even Conrad Coz does not know what will happen.

But... but Sai said he didn't want to die.

Koz felt like he was about to explode. Where should he go? What should he do?

In the end, he chose to abandon the fragile rationality that was torturing him, and he chose to follow his intuition...

Buoyancy gave him the answer.

Koz suddenly surfaced, cradling the loyalist's body, and the boundless darkness swallowed them up in the next second—

Koz was breathing heavily.

He saw himself kneeling on the ground, with Sevita lying beside him. Was he dead?

Conrad trembled.

Darkness has a smell, it is, it is...

He looked at the person opposite him, his face trembling.

That was the smell of poison from Death.

"You've already made your choice, haven't you? After all, you are his creation."

Makado said calmly.

“I think you can now rationally discuss the conflict between you two with Mortarian.”

I cannot rationally negotiate with him.

Mortarian immediately spoke up. The Lord of Death was quite pleased with Koz's disheveled state, but he remained outspoken.

Macardo frowned, seemingly displeased with Mortarian's interruption.

“If you can’t be rational, then let Hades come and talk to Conrad.”

I can barely remain rational.

Motarian immediately changed his tune without batting an eye.

Conrad Coz was gasping for breath, feeling like he was going to vomit, but apparently, apart from the astonished Horus, the other two who were arguing were no longer paying attention to him.

Is Sai alive or dead?

Koz thought.

The next moment, he saw the Sevita life signal displayed on the armor.

Sevita is still alive.

That was his noblest and most loyal child, that warrior of the empire, the pride of the legion.

He is still alive.

Chapter 299 Punishment from Hades

When Macardo left the inner room, he saw Hades and Severta talking.

When Hades saw Makado approaching, he looked up, smiled at the old man, and the oppressive feeling that had enveloped the entire hall quickly dissipated.

Sevita tried to stand up and bow, but was stopped by Macado's eyes. The old man slowly chose a seat and sat down, looking at Hades and Sevita with his deep eyes.

Hades raised an eyebrow and glanced toward the inner room, while Sevita also looked inside uneasily. Macado, ignoring their actions, let out a long sigh.

"I underestimated the difficulty of communicating with them."

Hades blinked. "At least Mortarian himself is hostile towards you. The fact that he was able to sit down and talk calmly is an effort he's made."

When facing the Imperial Regent, Severta became much more reserved, silently gazing at the old man, the judge sent by the Empire.

Hearing Hades' words, the old man sighed again. He thought of Lemanrus, the clever boy, who at least listened to him.

Meanwhile, Motalian and Conrad Coz... were either citing absurd examples to refute the other side or vehemently criticizing Macado.

The position of Imperial Regent is not easy to hold. When Macardo stood in this position, it was destined that most Primarchs would be at odds with him, and very few Primarchs could truly understand mortals.

Macardo steadied himself; the argument between the two Primarchs was truly a headache. He spoke up, steer the conversation back on track.

"What are your discussions about how to deal with the Midnight Lord?"

He was met with Hades' mocking gaze and Sevita's shocked expression.

Hades spoke with a mocking tone.

"I suspect they didn't come up with any substantial content or measures?"

As Hades spoke, he glanced at the inner room again. Because of Makado, he had put away the Dark Domain and could no longer observe the movements of the three Primarchs.

Macardo calmly looked at Hades, and the old man suddenly realized that this kind of provocative, dry humor had also appeared in Mortarion, and had been used by the Primarch against him.

"They are blinded by their personal feelings and find it difficult to calm down and deal with legion affairs."

Hades looked at Macado.

"It's understandable; for most Primarchs, their emotions are clearly a higher priority than anything else."

Sevita remained silent on the other side. In the conversation just now, he had realized that this Deathguard commander did not think highly of the Primarch—which was quite rare.

As far as he knew, the only Space Marine similar to Hades before him was probably Astlan of the First Legion.

But because of this attitude, Astram, the Space Marine, didn't fare very well in the Legion... while Hades became the de facto second-in-command of the Death Guard... He even had the power to correct Primarch errors...

In Hades, Sevita saw another way to make the Legion function properly... but he dared not stray in that direction... to defy the Primarch's will was unthinkable.

Hades, however, took this for granted. In the conversation just now, Sevita could tell that Hades was intentionally leading him astray...

Sevita swallowed hard. If...

The wound on his chest throbbed faintly, but a self-deprecating smile gradually appeared on his lips.

Across from him, Hades and Macardo had started discussing some rather inappropriate topics about the Primarch, but Macardo eventually coughed and changed the subject.

"So, did you ultimately reach a consensus, or will you remain the same as your Primarch?"

Sevita spoke in a hoarse voice,

"The Midnight Lord...is willing to accept punishment."

Beneath his hood, a smile appeared on Macardo's politician-like face.
