Chapter 438 First Encounter in Tianjing
Chapter 438 First Encounter in Tianjing
"Make way, make way!"
Zhou Da's voice came from ahead, steady and powerful.
Those who were stunned finally came to their senses and hurriedly dodged to the sides. But their eyes remained fixed on the three cars, and even after they drove past, they still craned their necks to look in that direction.
Little Ling'er pressed her face against the car window, her round eyes wide open, and kept saying, "Sister Wei, Tianjing is so lively!"
Wei Yiran remained silent.
She simply gazed out the window, at the familiar yet unfamiliar streets and alleys, at the pedestrians passing by the cars, and at the surprised, curious, stunned, or bewildered looks in their eyes.
She suddenly remembered something.
A year ago, she left the city in a carriage, heading towards Qingyang Valley. When she lifted the curtain and looked out, she saw the same streets and the same pedestrians. But back then, no one would have given the carriage a second glance, because it was such an ordinary thing.
And now, she's coming back in a car like this, and everyone's staring.
"Sister Wei," Xiao Ling'er suddenly turned to look at her, "Are you nervous?"
Wei Yiran remained silent for a moment.
"A little," she said.
Xiao Ling tilted her head and thought for a moment, then smiled: "It's okay, I'm here with you."
After she finished speaking, she turned her head back and continued to look out the car window.
Looking at her excited little face, Wei Yiran felt a slight relaxation in the tension that had been building up inside her.
The convoy continued forward.
After passing through the bluestone street and rounding the old stone bridge in the south of the city, we entered a wider street. The houses on both sides of this street were much more impressive than the shops we had just passed, with vermilion gates and high walls, and stone lions standing in front of the gates. Occasionally, servants would come out of the gates, and upon seeing this group of people, they would be startled at first, and then hurriedly shrink back.
"We're almost there," Zhou Da's voice came from ahead.
Wei Yiran's heart skipped a beat.
She looked out the window.
Ahead, the familiar mansion was gradually becoming clearer.
The vermilion gate had a plaque above it that read "Wei Mansion." The two stone lions in front of the gate were the same two as before, the ones she had wanted to climb as a child but never dared to. The stone steps in front of the gate were the same few steps she had to tread every day.
The car stopped in front of the mansion gate.
Wei Yiran sat in the car, staring at the vermilion gate, without moving for a long time.
Xiao Ling'er didn't urge her, but just sat quietly beside her, holding her hand.
Outside the carriage, Zhou Da had already dismounted and walked to the gate of the mansion. The two servants at the gate were startled when they saw him, then overjoyed: "Chief Zhou! You're back!"
Zhou Da nodded without saying anything more, but glanced back at the car.
The two servants followed his gaze and saw the three lying metal boxes; their expressions were priceless.
There was surprise, confusion, and curiosity.
But they didn't ask any further questions.
Zhou Da's attitude has already explained everything.
A moment later, Wei Yiran pushed open the car door and got out.
She stood in front of the mansion gate, gazing at the vermilion gate, the plaque above the gate, and the two stone lions in front of the gate.
The sunlight fell on her, warm and comforting.
The wind blew in from the alley, carrying a familiar scent.
She has been away from here for a year.
A year ago, she left in a carriage without looking back. A year later, she returned in a carriage just like this, stood here, looking at all of this, and couldn't quite describe the feeling in her heart.
"Madam."
An old voice came from inside the door.
Wei Yiran raised her head.
An elderly woman with a full head of white hair hurried out of the door, her eyes already red. She walked up to Wei Yiran, stopped, looked her up and down, her gaze sliding across Wei Yiran's face and landing on the wrist that was sticking out of the sleeve.
My wrists are thinner than before.
The old woman's tears welled up instantly.
"Madam..." her voice trembled, "You're finally back..."
Wei Yiran looked at her, her lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but she only softly called out, "Granny."
The old woman nodded repeatedly, wiping her tears with her sleeve, but she couldn't stop. She took a step forward, wanting to reach out and pull Wei Yiran, but then pulled back, just looking at her like that, and as she looked, tears welled up again.
"It's good that you're back, it's good that you're back..." she murmured. "Grandpa is waiting inside, hurry in, hurry in..."
Wei Yiran nodded.
She turned around and looked at the car.
Little Ling'er had jumped off the carriage and was standing beside it, looking up at the mansion. The excitement she had shown on the street was gone from her little face; only a quiet seriousness remained.
"Little Ling'er," Wei Yiran said cautiously, "would you like to wait here with the immortal masters for a moment?"
She paused slightly, then added, "Please trouble Xiaoling'er to tell all the immortal masters that we hope you will forgive any negligence."
Xiao Ling'er smiled and said, "Don't worry, Sister Wei, my junior uncle won't blame you."
Upon hearing this, Wei Yiran felt relieved and entered the house with Zhou Da and his twenty-odd riders, along with the maids and servants.
Only then did Chen Anran get out of the first car.
He stood beside the car, gazing at the vermilion gate, at the plaque above the gate that read "Wei Mansion," and at the two silent stone lions.
Qi Lan walked to his side and followed his gaze.
"Not going in?" she asked.
Chen Anran shook her head.
"Then shall we wait here?"
Chen Anran did not answer.
He just stood there, staring at the door, staring at the figure that had already disappeared inside.
Qi Lan glanced at him but didn't ask any more questions.
After the convoy came to a stop, the people in the other cars also got out one after another.
Master Tianbao was the first to jump out of the car. Before he could even stretch his limbs, he looked up and froze in place.
"My goodness..." He craned his neck, his mouth agape, wide enough to fit an egg. "This...this is..."
Jiang Yan climbed out of the driver's seat, followed his gaze, and the smile on his chubby face froze for a moment before turning into a long exclamation: "Wow!"
Feng Wenzheng stood beside the car, shading his eyes with his hand and squinting at the sky. His usually composed face now showed a hint of undisguised shock.
Huiming clasped his hands together, uttered a Buddhist chant, but his hand, which was holding prayer beads, paused. He gazed at the array of flying boats that blotted out the sky, and at the towering Immortal Alliance pavilion that reached into the clouds, remaining silent for a long time.
The brothers Feng Changyuan and Feng Lie were completely stunned. Feng Lie's mouth hung open, and after a long pause, he managed to stammer, "Brother, we...we've stumbled into a paradise?"
Feng Changyuan remained silent. He simply gazed at the nine-tiered pavilion with its soaring eaves, and at the white jade statue atop it that seemed to point towards the heavens. His Adam's apple bobbed.
Lin Xiaoman leaned against the car, tilting her head back, her amber eyes reflecting the passing boats. She didn't speak, just watched, watching the massive, mountain-like ships move slowly, watching the small boats darting among them like birds.
"The Dharma-ending Age..." she murmured, "I've never seen anything like this before..."
Qi Lan stood beside Chen Anran, the usual smile on her lips now slightly diminished. She gazed at the flying boats, her eyes narrowing slightly.
"Back in modern times," she said, "I thought the wooden bird from the Hidden Cloud Sect was novel enough. I never imagined..."
She didn't finish her sentence, but her meaning was already clear.
Compared to what's before us, the Cloud Hidden Sect's wooden bird is indeed just a "wooden bird".
Master Tianbao finally recovered from his shock, his hand stroking his beard trembling slightly: "We've seen cultivators flying along the way, riding swords, and stepping on magical artifacts. But once we entered the city..."
He paused, then looked up at the flying boats again, and sighed, "Now I understand what it means to be 'a frog in a well'."
Jiang Yan rubbed his fingers together, a complex light flashing in his small eyes: "Those sects in Qingyang Valley rule as kings and lords within a thousand miles. But compared to this Immortal Alliance..."
He shook his head and didn't continue.
As they were talking, the gates of the Wei residence were opened again, less than five minutes after Wei Yiran went inside.
