Chapter 8 Senior Sister, you are a cultivator!
Chapter 8 Senior Sister, you are a cultivator!
Chen Ran shrugged, still having the time to joke with Feng Xiaolu, "Senior sister, I can't feel anything. I haven't even entered the Qi Refining stage yet."
Feng Xiaolu rolled her eyes. "Then how come you're so bold?"
Chen Ran raised the peach wood sword, "Isn't this a magic weapon given to me by my senior sister? What's there to be afraid of?"
Feng Xiaolu was amused, and her fear subsided. She just pouted and said, "What good is this broken wooden sword if we encounter anything?"
The two spoke in hushed tones. Wang Anxi, following at the back, was sweating profusely with nervousness, her hand holding the phone to record the conversation trembling slightly, causing the camera to shake violently. She had no time to listen to Chen Anran and Feng Xiaolu's conversation.
"Waaaaah..."
Suddenly, a faint sound, like a woman crying, came from upstairs, intermittent and barely audible.
"Coming! Coming!" Feng Xiaolu jumped in fright, almost throwing her phone away. "Senior brother! Did you hear that?!"
Wang Anxi's face turned deathly pale, and his teeth were chattering: "It...it's that voice! It's even clearer at night!"
Chen Anran stopped and listened intently. The crying was mournful, with an indescribable eeriness. But when she looked around the corner of the stairwell from which the sound came, she saw nothing.
Chen Anran, who was walking at the front, turned to Feng Xiaolu and Wang Anxi, whose faces had turned pale, and said, "It seemed to be hesitant to show itself during the day. It looks like we'll have to wait until tonight."
"At night?!" Feng Xiaolu and Wang Anxi exclaimed almost simultaneously, their voices trembling.
"Are you crazy?!" Feng Xiaolu grabbed Chen Anran's arm and whispered, "It's this terrifying during the day, what will it be like at night? Let's go out first and discuss this further..."
Wang Anxi, sweating profusely, also said, "Master Chen, please think it over! It's too dangerous tonight!"
Chen Anran was speechless when she looked at Feng Xiaolu.
Senior sister, it's normal for Mr. Wang to be afraid, given his superstitious beliefs. But you're a cultivator, what are you afraid of?!
Chen Anran looked at Wang Anxi: "President Wang, if you are afraid, you can wait outside first. My junior sister and I can stay here."
Wang Anxi was torn with inner turmoil, terrified on one hand, yet also preoccupied with his superior's orders and the success or failure of the project on the other.
He glanced at Chen Anran, who appeared calm and confident, then at Feng Xiaolu, who was trying to appear composed, and finally gritted his teeth: "I'll stay too! But... Master Chen, Master Feng, you two must protect me!"
Feng Xiaolu was inwardly groaning, but since things had come to this, she could only choose to believe her junior brother, who seemed unusually different today. Forcing herself to remain calm, she took out several yellow talismans from her bag, handed one to Wang Anxi, stuck one on her own forehead, and then handed one to Chen Anran.
"Here! A calming talisman! To boost your courage!"
Chen Anran smiled and accepted it. Although he knew that the talisman was mostly just for psychological comfort, he still put it away as instructed.
"Let's continue upstairs then," Chen Anran said, stepping onto the stairs leading to the second floor. The wooden stairs creaked and groaned, sounding particularly jarring in the quiet building.
Feng Xiaolu and Wang Anxi were startled again. Only after Chen Anran's figure disappeared around the corner did the two of them quickly follow.
Feng Xiaolu quickly asked, "Aren't we staying until evening?"
Chen Anran replied, "Besides the fierce monsters, there are also zombies here. Everyone says zombies are afraid of sunlight, so we can take care of them while it's daytime. Third Senior Sister, could you use your compass to find out where that zombie is?"
As they spoke, they reached the second floor, where the situation was even worse than on the first. Most of the doors on both sides of the corridor were broken, and the dark doorways resembled gaping mouths ready to devour anyone. The stench of decay was even more pronounced here.
Feng Xiaolu stared intently at Chen Anran's profile, not because she thought he was particularly handsome, but because she was shocked that their junior brother, who usually kept a low profile, was incredibly audacious! What kind of time was this to be actively seeking out "zombies"? And even actively trying to eliminate them?
Wake up, junior brother! That peach wood sword is fake, it's useless!
"What are you probing for!" Feng Xiaolu's voice tightened as she clutched her compass tightly. "My compass... the needle was spinning wildly outside, but inside this building, it's acting like it's broken, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't!"
As if to confirm her words, the compass needle was trembling slightly, pointing in an unclear direction, seemingly swaying between multiple directions.
Upon hearing this, Chen Anran's gaze swept across the dimly lit corridor, finally settling on the trembling needle of the compass. He pondered, "The needle's erratic movement suggests either a chaotic energy field here, or something is interfering."
His words made the hairs on the back of Feng Xiaolu and Wang Anxi's necks stand on end.
"Interference?" Feng Xiaolu's voice trembled. "Junior Brother, don't scare me..."
Chen Anran rolled his eyes again, then leaned close to her ear and whispered, "Senior sister, you are a cultivator. Even if there are monsters, they should be afraid of you, not you. Besides, we still have our magic weapons." He waved the peach wood sword in his hand.
Feng Xiaolu was on the verge of tears, thinking to herself, "You know how much of a fraud I am as a cultivator!" But after her junior brother's words, and seeing Wang Anxi's expectant gaze beside her, she had no choice but to bite the bullet and pretend to hold the compass, chanting incantations: "Heaven and earth are boundless, the universe borrows its power... Search for traces, evil spirits reveal themselves..."
The compass needle continued to spin erratically and shakily, but after a while, it clearly pointed to the end of the corridor.
Wang Anxi stared at the compass needle, his legs trembling so badly he almost lost his balance. His voice trembling with tears, he cried out, "It's the one on the far left! The worker said the room with the green eyes was that one!"
Chen Anran and Feng Xiaolu looked in the direction the compass needle and Wang Anxi were pointing. The door on the left at the end of the corridor was half open, and the room inside was pitch black, as if it could swallow up light. The nauseating, putrid stench was emanating most strongly from that direction.
"Looks like this is it." Chen Anran gripped the thousand-year-old evil-repelling wooden sword in his hand.
"Are we really going to go?" Feng Xiaolu's voice trembled noticeably as she gripped Chen Anran's clothes tightly.
"Don't forget, it's daytime now," Chen Anran reminded her, trying to give her some courage. "Let's deal with it now so we can focus on the 'crying' one tonight."
That's the logic, but looking at the dark doorway, Feng Xiaolu felt her legs go weak. She had cultivated for many years, but her spiritual power was meager. She could deal with ordinary people by acting and using a little bit of "special effects," but when faced with this kind of unknown evil spirit, fear was her instinct.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here for you."
With that, Chen Anran took the lead and walked in that direction.
Seeing Chen Anran's reaction, Feng Xiaolu and Wang Anxi had no choice but to follow.
