Chapter 38 The Blazing Sword

Chapter 38 The Blazing Sword

The dwarves had promised to reforge the finest sword for Dui, so they wouldn't have made such a promise without reason.

To improve the quality and power of the sword, they took some of their treasured mithril and added it to the ancient sword during forging.

Mithril is an extremely rare and precious magical metal. It is as light as silver but harder than steel. If a little is added to ordinary steel, it can be used to forge a sword that can cut through iron like mud.

Even the Ring of Water, one of the three Rings of the Elves, is made of mithril.

The only known source of mithril ore is the Moria Mine, which is inhabited by the Balrog. However, since the Balrog occupied the Moria Mine, mithril has lost its source and has become even more precious and rare.

The fact that the swords can now be used to forge Dui is enough to demonstrate the dwarves' sincerity.

This also shows how much the Dulin dwarves longed to reclaim Lonely Mountain.

Through continuous forging and tempering, Thorin and the two dwarven craftsmen spent three whole days gradually reshaping the ancient sword.

Before the final quenching, Dui intervened.

Amidst the puzzled gazes of the three dwarves, he approached the red-hot sword, drew his wand, and used it as a pen, waving it against the sword from a distance. Mysterious runes appeared on the sword's surface.

Infused with magic, the runes emitted a faint glow, like flowing symbols, becoming even more mysterious and extraordinary.

"What kind of script is this?" Thorin and the two craftsmen had never seen this script before, and they were very surprised and curious. They could feel that this script contained magic, which was no less than that of Elven and Dwarven script.

Dui replied, "This is runes."

These days, besides keeping an eye on the progress of sword forging, he has been diligently studying the contents of the "Dictionary of Runes". Although he can't be called an expert, he has learned a few basic runes and engraved them on the sword.

Upon hearing Dui's answer, the dwarves exchanged bewildered glances. "Runic script? Are we so ignorant? How come we don't recall these symbols in runic script?"

Dui slapped his forehead; he had forgotten that the dwarves' script was also called runes, but the dwarves' runes were not the same as the runes of the magical world.

To be precise, the dwarven runes originated from the script invented by the Sindar elves, and can be considered a variant of Elvish script, also known as the chirs.

Runes, as described in the Dictionary of Runes, are an ancient magical script in the Harry Potter world. It is said that Odin, the king of the gods, invented them. To gain supreme wisdom, Odin hung himself upside down on the World Tree for nine days and nine nights, suffering torment, and sacrificed his right eye to obtain the secrets of runes from the Well of Wisdom.

Of course, in the Harry Potter world, Odin, the king of the gods, is just a powerful wizard in Norse mythology, but the runes he invented form the basis of ancient magic and alchemy.

So he immediately explained, "This is not your dwarven runes, but the runes of wizards, which can also be called magic runes."

The dwarves suddenly realized, but were even more curious and surprised.

As far as they knew, there were very few wizards in the entire Middle-earth, and even those few wizards had writing.

But no matter how curious they were, their most important task at the moment was to complete the forging of the ancient sword.

Then came another round of quenching, hammering, and polishing.

Finally, a golden longsword, over 1 meter long, with exquisite shape, elegant design, natural curves, thickness, and textures, and without any particularly ornate decorations, quietly emerged.

The ancient sword was originally cast in bronze, but the dwarves have added some mithril to it, giving it a golden color with a silvery sheen and covered with faint silver patterns, making it look like a sword forged from gold.

Dui grasped the sword with delight. The reforged blade was much smaller and lighter than before, but it suited him much better.

He tried to infuse the sword with magic, and several mysterious runes instantly appeared on the blade. The runes shone, and the sword ignited with scorching red flames, releasing high temperatures that distorted the surrounding air.

This is the power of the runes that Dui inscribed on the sword. When he was reading the "Dictionary of Runes," he had thought about combining the dwarven forging techniques with the power of runes to make the sword more powerful.

So he specially chose runic symbols representing fire and combined them in the simplest way to inscribe them on the sword.

And the result was as Dui had expected, even exceeding his expectations.

He excitedly gripped the flaming sword in his hand and cleaved it in two at the wooden stake beside him. The flames from the sword quickly climbed up the stake and engulfed it.

Thorin, one of the forgers, was also shocked by the power of the sword he had forged.

If used to fight enemies, even if you are not killed by the sword, you will be burned to death by the strange flames on the sword!

As for the other two dwarf craftsmen, after the initial shock, they were extremely excited. Being able to forge such a powerful sword, they would be remembered in history when the sword's fame spread.

This is an achievement that many craftsmen dream of.

After managing to regain his composure, Thorin asked Dui, "What are you going to name this sword?"

Dui put down his sword, the flames on the blade disappeared, and the runes vanished once more.

"The Blazing Sword, let's call it the Blazing Sword!" Dui said, his eyes shining as he stroked the sword as if it were a precious jewel.

Thorin nodded, recalling how the sword had just unleashed flames. "The sword lives up to its name; it is indeed fitting. I hope this sword will shine brightly in your hands in the future."

"Yes, it will!"

After the sword was forged, Thorin and the two craftsmen spent another day helping to create a scabbard.

The scabbard is beautiful and sturdy, made of ivory wrapped around gold, exquisitely carved, and inlaid with gorgeous gemstones.

Inserting the flaming sword into its sheath and securing it to his waist with a leather belt, Dui would look quite like a knight if he were to put on a suit of armor.

Thorin looked at Dui and urged him to stay a few more days. He had already sent a message to his distant relatives, and once they arrived, the expedition team would be complete.

It wasn't that he had developed a deep affection for Dui these past few days, but rather that he wanted to win Dui over to his side so that he could take a dominant position in the expedition alongside Gandalf.

Dui naturally guessed Thorin's thoughts and secretly shook his head.

Over the course of their time together, he had come to realize that Thorin Oakenshield was an extremely stubborn and arrogant person, and also suspicious and distrustful, probably not trusting anyone except the dwarves.

Although it is not obvious now, these traits will be amplified and become more obsessive once the "Dragon Disease" is triggered by the Lonely Mountain Treasure.

These days, Dui and Dui seem to be getting closer, but their relationship is still purely transactional and nothing has changed.

So Dui declined Thorin's offer to stay, shaking his head and saying, "I'll go first; I have other matters to attend to. I'll meet you in the Shire later."

Then, under Thorin's silent gaze, Dui, carrying his newly acquired sword, drove his carriage away from the dwarf town.

In fact, Dui wasn't lying. In the past two days, he had noticed that the two pots of mandrake in the carriage had become somewhat restless, and the pimples on their faces had disappeared, indicating that they were about to mature.

He couldn't handle the mandrake in the dwarven territory, so he planned to process it further after returning to the Shire.

It takes about seven days to travel from the dwarf town to the Shire. When we were halfway there, the two pots of mandrakes had matured and had sprouted a small flower bud.

Mature mandrakes are extremely dangerous; their calls can be deadly. Therefore, Dui needs to periodically apply petrification spells to them to prevent them from suddenly emerging from the ground and making a fatal sound.

Carefully tending to the two pots of mandrake, Dui finally returned to the Shire, arriving at Hobbiton on the afternoon of the seventh day.
