Chapter 102 No. 81 Chaonei 2
Chapter 102 No. 81 Chaonei 2
"Were those missionaries in cahoots with some powerful family?"
"I asked, Fatty Lin."
"no!"
Old Master Liu shook his head and said, "The missionaries paid for it, but they didn't build the building!"
"How to build above ground is determined by blueprints, so there's no room for trickery. But how to build underground is not up to those missionaries to decide!"
"Are you saying there's a tunnel down there?" I asked.
"That's right!"
Master Liu exhaled a smoke ring and said, "That powerful clan left something in the tunnel!"
"What did you leave behind?" Fatty Lin asked.
"I won't say for now, you'll understand after this is resolved!" Master Liu kept everyone in suspense again.
My brother and I were extremely anxious, but since Uncle Liu wouldn't tell us, there was nothing we could do. We'd find out sooner or later anyway; we'd find out when we got there.
"Second Master, what preparations do we need to make for this trip?" I asked.
"Bring plenty of protective and mind-clearing items, but you don't need anything else; I have prepared them!" said Master Liu.
"When are we going?" I asked.
"Wait a little longer, until it gets dark, then we'll set off!" said Master Liu.
An hour later, we set off for No. 81 Chaonei Road.
From the outside, No. 81 Chaonei Street doesn't look like much. If it weren't for the rumors of it being haunted, it would just appear to be an ordinary, somewhat old building.
The rest of us came in through the main entrance.
Before coming in, Master Liu took out shovels, picks and other tools from his car and gave them to Fatty Lin to take with him.
Before opening the trunk, we thought it contained magical artifacts, but after opening it, we were both dumbfounded.
There was nothing he could do; since Master Liu told him to take it, Fatty Lin had no choice but to.
After bringing in the tools, Uncle Liu led us on a tour of the room. Apart from being a bit cold and smelling musty, I didn't see anything special.
"Second Master, wasn't it supposed to be haunted? I haven't felt anything at all!"
Fatty Lin was the first to notice something was wrong.
"hehe!"
Master Liu smiled and said, "Do you know when the rumors about this place being haunted started?"
"I don't know!" Fatty Lin shook his head.
"The year 2000!" Old Master Liu uttered slowly, his voice cold. "Before that, there were no rumors of ghosts here!"
"Second Master, do you mean that the rumors of ghosts are being deliberately spread by someone?" Long Nier asked.
"That's right!"
Master Liu gave Long Ni'er an approving look, then pointed at the two of us and said, "Ni'er is so smart. You two are such blockheads!"
"Second Master, are you saying this place isn't haunted?"
I asked.
"Look at you, you've really come up with that when I said you were a blockhead!" Old Master Liu said, looking at him with a disappointed expression.
"Second Master, am I stupid? Stop being so mysterious, what's going on here?" I said helplessly.
"With a location like this, if there wasn't something fishy going on, wouldn't someone else have taken it over?" Old Master Liu snorted and said, "Every time news spreads that someone has taken it over, there's an uproar here!"
"There are many legends about this house, such as arranging a ghost marriage for the son, or being the second concubine of a warlord!"
"These rumors are what cemented this place's reputation as the most haunted house in Beijing!"
"Are these rumors true or false?" I asked.
"It's true in some ways, and false in others!" said Master Liu.
"Second Master, you've confused me!" I said.
"What Second Master means is that the matter is true, but it's not as mysterious as the rumors outside. Someone is deliberately exaggerating the story to solidify the reputation of No. 81 Chaonei as the number one haunted house in Beijing!" Long Nier said.
"That's right!"
Old Master Liu clapped his hands and said, "Little Feng, you've found a good wife!"
"Hehe!" I chuckled foolishly.
"Second Master, she's still not satisfied and is reluctant to commit to a relationship with me!" Long Nier said.
"Don't worry, if this kid ever dares to betray you in the future, Second Master will stand up for you!" said Second Master Liu.
"Yes, from now on, Second Master will be my family!" Long Nier said.
I inwardly grimaced. Fatty Lin glanced at me, then at Long Ni, and unusually, didn't contradict me. Instead, he asked, "Second Master, what exactly is wrong with this house?"
Old Master Liu stamped his foot and gestured downwards with his lip, saying, "The problem lies down there!"
"You mean the authentic one? But where is the authentic one?" I asked.
"Where?"
Master Liu looked around and said, "Come on, I'll take you down into the tunnel!"
Following Master Liu to the first floor, he carried a compass and wandered around this room and that room.
"Second Master, you mentioned before that a powerful clan had established a presence here. If we count from the late Qing Dynasty, it's been almost a hundred years!"
After walking around for a while, Fatty Lin couldn't help but say something.
"Which powerful clan is so powerful that they could plan for a hundred years? From the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China and then to the founding of the People's Republic of China, that period was so chaotic. How did they ensure they wouldn't run into trouble and could continue their plans?"
I followed up with the question.
Uncle Liu ignored us, instead pointing to a spot with his foot and saying, "Dig it up here!"
I took a step back to make room and said, "Fatty, you come here!"
"I'll do it!"
Fatty Lin spat into his palm, swung his pickaxe, and dug at the spot that Master Liu had pointed to.
In no time, the ground was dug open, revealing a hollow space underneath.
"Wow, it really is an authentic place!"
Fatty Lin stopped what he was doing and looked inside.
"Nonsense, what would I have asked you to dig for if not for that?"
Old Master Liu glared at Fatty Lin and said, "Hurry up, keep digging, the sooner we're done, the better!"
"Why!"
Fatty Lin nodded and picked up his pickaxe to continue digging.
After the first brick was removed, the rest was easy. In less than ten minutes, a hole big enough for us to go down into was dug out.
I shone my flashlight down and saw that it was a tunnel with no end in sight on either side.
When the light was taken out, a chilling aura emanated from the cave entrance, sending shivers down one's spine.
"The yin energy is so strong!" Fatty Lin muttered.
"I'll go first, you guys follow!"
Master Liu glanced at it and then jumped down, not afraid at all of an ambush below.
Upon seeing this, Fatty Lin hurriedly went downstairs.
"Wife, come with me!"
I turned around and gave them a brief explanation before jumping down.
After landing, I shone my flashlight around.
The tunnel is about 1.5 meters wide and less than 2 meters high. The walls on the left and right sides are made of bluestone, and the ground is paved with blue bricks.
After coming down, I kept hearing sounds that sounded like both crying and laughing.
Ignoring all that, Master Liu picked up the compass again and started measuring, sometimes taking two steps forward and sometimes one step back.
"This is it!"
After walking back and forth like this for nearly five minutes, Master Liu stopped and pointed to the ground.
"I see the Jade Rabbit, the Jade Rabbit has risen early in the east again!"
No sooner had the words left his mouth than a loud opera singing voice rang out from across the room.
"Brother, behind us!"
Long Nier nudged me at that moment, and I turned around to see a wedding sedan chair that had appeared out of nowhere in the depths of the darkness.
