Frilian: Starting by inheriting the title of the Southern Hero

Chapter 33 The Shadow of the Capital

Chapter 33 The Shadow of the Capital

In the thirty-first year of the Xin Dynasty, Lynn and Laoffen arrived in the imperial capital, Esberger.

The shortest route to Flo Village is through here.

Walking down the bustling street, Lynn quickly noticed the Vlamé statue in the square ahead and couldn't help but say:

"This is the first time I've ever seen this statue."

"Mr. Lynn, there are desserts for sale over there."

Raofen pointed to the long queue of shops not far away, dangling her staff under her arm. "Want to take a look?"

"Go ahead," Lynn said with a smile.

Now that we're here, it's fine to relax a little, since we still have to cross snow-capped mountains for the rest of the journey.

Just then, the sound of horses' hooves came.

It was a black four-wheeled carriage, the carriage made of ebony wood, without any superfluous decorations, except for an inconspicuous badge painted in dark gold on the door.

Lynn casually glanced around the carriage and saw a one-eyed man sitting inside.

The man had gray hair and wore a black eye patch over his right eye, with a hideous burn scar extending from the edge of the patch, almost covering the right half of his face.

Levi! Governor of the Rolbea Territory, the northernmost part of the Empire!

He is also the commander of the warriors in the film!

How did I end up running into this guy here? What bad luck.

Lynn was grumbling to himself when Levi, who was in the carriage, noticed his gaze and turned his head.

Bad thing!

Lynn cursed inwardly and quickly looked away.

The warriors in the film are all cautious, powerful, and formidable opponents; even a fleeting expression cannot escape their detection and analysis.

What's more, this guy is the leader of the Shadow Warriors, Levi!

That one second of eye contact revealed too much.

"Mr. Lynn?"

Laofen's voice pulled Lynn back to reality, "The line is getting shorter, let's hurry up."

"Um."

Lynn casually placed her hand on Laofen's shoulder and pushed her toward the cookie shop.

Just a few steps away, his gaze casually swept over the roadside stalls, and he immediately narrowed his eyes.

Someone's following us!

The feeling of being spied on wasn't strong, but that just showed the other person was an expert who knew how to conceal their presence.

"I want that one, and that one too."

Upon entering the store, Laofen immediately began selecting items, exclaiming, "They all smell so wonderful!"

"Boss, one of each, please."

Lynn took out his money bag, took out two silver coins, and slapped them on the counter.

While taking out his money, he casually glanced outside the door.

At the street corner, an old man who looked like a beggar was leaning against the wall, basking in the sun.

The old man was short, had a long white beard, and looked slovenly.

But Lynn recognized the man at a glance: Varos!

One of the top fighters in the film, skilled with a spear, and a warrior who fought against the war god Levallo!

This is a big problem.

Being targeted by this group is far more troublesome than being targeted by monsters.

If it were a monster, it would be a fight to the death, but when facing these human warriors, he had no reason to kill them outright.

But if they aren't dealt with, these guys won't let me off easily.

"Sigh, I shouldn't have looked that long."

Lynn was somewhat annoyed; things had really taken an unexpected turn.

"Sir, your cookies."

The clerk handed over the paper bag of cookies, which Lynn took and pushed into Laoffen's arms.

"Take your time eating," Lynn said.

Laofen, clutching the paper bag, asked in a low voice, "Mr. Lynn, are we being watched?"

"Oh? Why do you say that?"

Lynn was somewhat surprised, because in the original story, Laoffen did not show much cleverness.

"I can tell from your expression," Laofen said.

"Is it that obvious?"

Lynn subconsciously touched his face, thinking to himself that he was still too young and naive, that Raofen could actually see through his thoughts.

"What's the next step?"

Laofen remained calm, a quality Lynn had to admire.

But upon closer reflection, it seems that everyone I've met so far, no matter what happens, has had an excessively calm expression.

"Let's leave here first."

Lynn left the store with Laofen.

Seeing Lynn come out, Varos slowly straightened up and followed.

"Are the people following us connected to the people in the carriage earlier?"

Laofen asked while chewing on a biscuit.

"right."

Lynn hadn't expected that Laofen would be able to make the connection.

I underestimated the people around me.

"Are the people tracking us very strong?"

"Very strong, and very troublesome."

"More troublesome than Mahathir?"

"Two different things."

Lynn said, "Demons kill purely out of instinct. These people do it for work, and those who do it for work are the most troublesome."

"Shake them off by taking the back alleys?" Laofen suggested.

"No, we'll take the main road."

The capital city has relatively good public security, and the warriors in the shadows all have public identities, so even if they wanted to do something underhanded, they couldn't do it in public.

Moreover, the warriors in the shadows have their own rules, and they won't just kill Lynn because he behaves a little strangely.

After walking a few steps, Lynn suddenly stopped.

"What's wrong?"

Laofen was puzzled.

"They got close."

Lynn turned around and looked at Varos, the homeless man behind him.

"Please, you two, have mercy."

Varos stretched out his hands, his body hunched over.

Lynn took out a silver coin and handed it to the old man, placing it in his palm.

"Thanks."

The old man bowed and scraped, then walked past.

"Gone?"

Laofen had already raised her staff halfway, ready to face the enemy.

"Otherwise what?"

Lynn remained calm and composed. "He probably just wants to observe us up close."

"What's the point of this?" Laofen asked, puzzled.

"Who knows? But we'll probably get our news out of them soon."

The Shadow Warrior's intelligence network spans the entire Empire, including Sister Lorelei, Zain's friend Kleis, Father Clementis, and street vendor Gazela, among others.

Considering the time frame, Celie's assassination attempt hasn't even started yet. I don't want to end up on the assassination list before she does.

……

Night falls quickly in the capital.

Varos went into a tavern and found a corner seat to sit down.

Wolf was wiping the now sparkling clean glass with a gray cloth when he glanced at Varos and asked:

"What would you like to drink?"

"Have a glass of ale."

Varos Road.

"Iris!"

Wolf turned and called out to the room behind the counter, and immediately a petite figure came out carrying a tray.

Iris wore her hair in pigtails, which fell over her shoulders. Her cheeks were rosy and glowing, making her look very cute.

"They're here."

She placed a large glass of frothy ale in front of Varos. "Please have some."

Varos picked up his glass, took a big gulp, and then glanced at the other three.

The tavern was now filled with shadow warriors.

Schulte was slumped over the table, drinking heartily from a wine glass.

Opposite her, Lutine was holding a thick book and flipping through it as if no one else was around.

Gazela sat next to Lutine, fiddling with some cheap trinkets in her hands.

A short while later, the door was pushed open again, and Father Clementis walked in.

He was dressed in a neat priest's robe, with a cross on his chest, and a gentle smile on his face.

Good evening, everyone.

Clematis walked to the long table, pulled out a chair, sat down, and glanced at everyone. "Is everyone here?"

"We've reached pretty much everything that's within reach."

Wolf said.

"Let's get down to business."

"As you all probably know," Clematis said, "Levy met a strange guy today."

"He's a young man, and he's accompanied by a mage."

Varos walked over with a wine glass in his hand and interjected.

"Have you gotten close enough?"

Gazzera looked at Varos.

"right."

Varos pulled a silver coin from his pocket; it was the one Lynn had given him.
